4 ChatGPT prompts to help you translate your military experience

We’re big fans of working smarter, not harder.

That’s the beauty of AI.

Last week, we talked about one of the biggest challenges in transition: translation.

Turning military experience into clear, impactful language that employers understand.

It’s not always easy.

You’ve lived and breathed military life, so breaking it down for someone with no frame of reference can feel like translating another language.

Because it is.

Enter ChatGPT.

This tool can help you easily put your experience into context for civilian hiring managers.

We’ve put together 4 practical prompts -

💬 Translate Resume Bullet Points

Your resume is the best place to work on your translation.

This is your chance to show your value to a potential employer.

So - it’s crucial you speak their language.

Firstly, you can use this prompt to translate your military experience into civilian terms -

Prompt 1: “Translate this military experience into a civilian resume bullet point: [paste your original description here]”

And secondly, make sure your resume bullet points go beyond what you did.

Focus on the results. This prompt can help -

Prompt #2: “Turn this list of responsibilities into measurable resume bullets with impact: [paste your bullets or tasks]”

This helps you go from “I did stuff’ to “I got results”

💬 Highlight Transferrable Strengths

Prompt #3: “Rewrite this duty description in a way that highlights leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills: [paste duty]”

Use this to shift the focus from your title to your transferable strengths.

Leadership. Problem solving. Organizational skills.

These are the core competencies that companies hire for.

Transferable skills will be your best friend during the transition.

This prompt will help you bridge the gap between what you did and what that means to the employer.

💬 Use Your Background to Match Jobs

Maybe you’re still not sure what you want to do.

It’s part of the journey - we get it.

ChatGPT may be able to help!

It may help you to align your background with job postings you maybe would not have considered otherwise.

Prompt #4: “Give me 3 civilian job titles that match this experience: [paste your MOS, role, or summary of what you did]”

This may open up more options for you to explore!

Try it out and see what comes up.

I recently caught up with a friend who just wrapped up their SkillBridge internship. When they started planning their transition out of the Navy, they were worried… worried their experience wouldn’t translate, worried they’d feel out of place, and worried no one would take their skills seriously. But instead of letting that uncertainty win, they jumped into a SkillBridge internship with a federal agency’s legal team. They asked questions, volunteered for everything, and made sure their...
