Simple ways to start networking

Welcome to this week's guide to military transition success!

Let’s talk about something that can make or break your job search: networking.

Networking is one of the most powerful tools you have, especially as you transition into the civilian job market. As you explore potential opportunities, there are so many different career paths and companies that it can be hard to determine what you want to do.

Enter networking.

The best place to start is to network with people who have been through this transition - veterans.

The veteran community is everywhere. You’ll find they are eager to help by sharing insights and valuable guidance from their own transitions.

Here are a few ways to get started with networking -

Use LinkedIn
If you don’t already have a LinkedIn profile, create one now.

As a starting point, make sure it’s a complete profile—add a professional photo, your work history, and relevant skills. Start to familiarize yourself with the platform (servicemembers get a free premium account for one year)!

Check out future newsletters for how to get the most out of LinkedIn through searches and other functions.

Join Veteran Networking Groups
Once your LinkedIn is up, joining networking groups is a great starting point for reaching out to veterans.

These will make it easiest for you to connect with others who have already made the transition.

Use these groups to meet people, ask for industry insights, and get advice on making a successful career shift.

Here are a few you can check out and request to join:

Attend Networking Events
Whether it’s a job fair or an industry-specific event, get out there and network! Use sites like Eventbrite, Meetup, or even Facebook to find local or virtual events.

You never know who you might meet, and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the jobs available in your field.

Pro-tip: Set up Google Alerts for terms like “veterans networking events” or “veteran career fair” in your area to get real-time updates.

She was an English major and had some impressive degrees, but she would not have said tech was a major skill of hers (yet). But she landed a SkillBridge opportunity with Salesforce! Alexa had never even touched...
