Your first year out - 3 things that may surprise you

So you’ve taken off the uniform. Now what?

Everyone talks about getting the job, filing the paperwork, securing VA benefits, and just getting out - but few talk about what actually happens in that first year after the military.

The truth?

Transitioning is a total LIFE shift.

Even the best-prepared service members hit some surprises along the way.

Here are a few of those surprises (and how to handle them).

#1 The Loss of Structure Can Feel… Weird

For years, your schedule was built for you—morning formations, training cycles, deployments.

Now? It’s all on you.

Some people love the freedom. For others, it takes some adjusting.

🚨 What Helps: Build a routine. Even if your job doesn’t require it, set a daily schedule that keeps you focused and productive. For us, it’s morning workouts! This structure helps us stay grounded.

Find what works for you and stick with it.

#2 Finding Community Takes Effort

In the military, camaraderie is automatic.

In the civilian world? You have to build it.

Many vets feel disconnected in their first year, but the good news? You don’t have to go it alone.

Making the effort to connect, whether personally or professionally, can make a huge difference in your transition.

👥 What Helps:

Find ways to connect with other veterans and build friendships through local communities, events, or shared hobbies.

For example, the non-profit, Team RWB, brings veterans together around physical fitness. You can find groups like running clubs, CrossFit, or hiking.

Or maybe community service interests you? Check out The Mission Continues. This is a non-profit that connects veterans to service projects that give an opportunity to get involved and make a difference.

Whatever you choose, you will be better for it!

#3 The “Perfect Job” Might Take Longer Than Expected

A lot of transitioning service members expect to land the perfect fit right away.

The reality?

Many veterans take a role or company or two to find the perfect fit, especially if civilian work environments are completely new to you.

💼 What Helps:

If you haven’t transitioned yet, SkillBridge can be a game-changer.

It gives you real-world experience in a civilian role before you leave the military, helping you test out industries, build connections, and even secure a job offer before your separation date.

Already out?

Treat your career like a mission.

Your first job out isn’t your final destination - it’s a launchpad.

Keep building skills, networking, and refining your goals.

Remember, your transition doesn’t end on your separation date.

It’s a journey.

It takes time, patience, and a solid game plan. You got this!

Check out Team RWB!

This non-profit has local chapters focused on building community around fitness.

Some people think you need a tech background to break into a company like Salesforce. Not true! Just ask our friend Alexa. When she was transitioning out of the Navy as a SWO, Alexa was looking for a SkillBridge internship to help her develop her skillset for a civilian career. She was an English major and had some impressive degrees, but she would not have said tech was a major skill of hers (yet). But she landed a SkillBridge opportunity with Salesforce! Alexa had never even touched...
